Microsoft trained 4 million Nigerians in tech skills in 3 years. 70,000 got certified
At Data Science Nigeria, our approach to digital skills development is rooted in one principle: local relevance drives real impact.
In partnership with Microsoft, we designed and delivered training programmes tailored to the Nigerian context, moving beyond generic content to create practical, relatable learning experiences.
Through a hub-and-spoke model and a strong train-the-trainer approach, we have enabled learning centres and facilitators across the country to extend these skills into their communities. This multiplier effect continues to drive measurable impact, from empowering individuals to supporting small businesses with data-driven decision-making.

African languages for AI: The project that’s gathering a huge new dataset
Discover how we contributed to a continent wide effort to reduce the underrepresentation of African languages in Artificial Intelligence. Supported by the Gates Foundation and working alongside partners across Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the project gathered one of the largest datasets of African languages for speech recognition and language technology development. DSN led data collection in five widely spoken languages including Bambara, Hausa, Igbo, Nigerian Pidgin and Yoruba to ensure that future AI tools reflect the way Africans speak and communicate in everyday life. This initiative strengthened digital inclusion, preserved linguistic heritage and supported the development of culturally relevant AI systems for Africa and the world.
EdoCert: The digital solution giving Nigerians a fair chance
Data Science Nigeria led the development of EdoCert, a digital system that replaces fragile paper school certificates in Edo State with secure, easily accessible digital records. Built on the open-source Sunbird platform, EdoCert helps reduce lost documents, forgery, and storage issues. The project shows how digital public infrastructure can work at scale and could be expanded to other important records in the future.
